The Saddle

I grew up in my grandparent’s house. This place was an artist’s studio, a farm, and a refuge for both people and animals.

My grandfather’s horses had a good life. Later, in 1980, when my grandfather died, we kept the horses until the end of their lives, but they were no longer ridden.

In 2009, the house was demolished, and with it, a very special story and an entire era were buried beneath the rubble. Yet even when an old way of life falls apart, fragments of it remain in the surrounding world for a long time.

One such fragment is a damaged saddle, which I had kept out of nostalgia and for future leatherwork. Saddle leather is exceptionally strong and durable. I am fascinated by the craftsmanship and the inner structure of a saddle, and by the opportunity to study how it is made. I used the leather in my box-making work because it allows me to incorporate a memory — the scent of horses, a fragment of my childhood — into my artwork.

“I ruined the saddle, removed the bridle, and turned it into a suitcase.

I set the horse free and released it into the wilderness. Now it can visit its relatives and gallop across the African savannah alongside the zebras.”
